VAMOS UNIDOS TO PROVIDE FREE LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR MEMBERS (8/19/08)
VAMOS Unidos together with Common Law, will provide free representation to fight off Environmental Control Board (ECB) summons. These summons reach up to $1,000 and a street vendor can receive multiple ECB summons. Berta, co-founder of VAMOS Unidos and a licensed vendor recently received $3,000 dollars worth of summons. Berta was able to get all summons dismissed with the aid of VAMOS Unidos. Berta recently appeared in an article in Norwood News. Common Law is a non-profit organization that provides legal services to grassroots organizations so that we may focus on our organizing. VAMOS UNIDOS GETS HEARING AND TESTIFIES AT CITY HALL (Nov. 14th, 2008)
City Council held long overdue hearings on street vending legislations. Members of VAMOS Unidos testified about the alarming need for City Council to pass Intro. 324A which would considerably increase the number of food cart permits. Members testified on the current conditions street vendors that do not have food cart permits face such as arrests, beatings, fines of up to $3,000, and confiscations. The solution from Mayor Bloomberg’s Office was to arrest and fingerprint all street vendors without a cart permit. VAMOS Unidos strongly opposes the further criminalization of working people by Bloomberg’s office .........click here to read moreHearing_and_Testify.htmlshapeimage_6_link_0
